During a fire, building contents can suffer extensive damage from smoke, water, and soot. Tampa Bay Restoration specializes in content cleaning.

Heat, soot, ash, smoke odor and water from the fire can affect everything. Carpets, drapes, furniture, appliances and electronic equipment, if not destroyed, may retain the smoke odor and be damaged by soot. Often everything in the home needs to be professionally cleaned, deodorized and stored.

The cleaning process varies not only by type of fire but also the type of fabric. The first step in soot cleaning is to remove as much dry soil as possible using a dry cleaning sponge, power blower, or special vacuum. The next cleaning step, based on the fabric and extent of the damage, is dry side or wet side cleaning. Dry side cleaning is used with more delicate fabrics. Wet side cleaning is the preferred cleaning method used in moderate to heavy soot damage. If the fire damage is very extensive, it is unlikely that the specific content can be salvaged.

  • Rush items
  • There are always critically important documents and materials that may be needed to be cleaned almost immediately. We work closely with the home owner to complete these within several business days.

  • Upholstered Furniture- soft goods
  • Sofas, chairs, mattresses and pillows, will be vacuumed, wet- or dry-cleaned as necessary, and deodorized. After the cleaning process is completed, each item will be inspected to determine if there is possible discoloration or damage. Occasionally, upholstery may show discoloration and/or wear-and-tear due to age, body oils, and sunlight.

  • Furniture- hard goods
  • Hard case furniture, such as tables, dressers, chests, and bookcases, will be detail hand-cleaned with a mild degreaser and deodorized. If the item is wood, it will be lightly polished with an emulsion for fire damaged furniture and any scratches that may have previously existed will be touched up. If, after cleaning the item, there is any unforeseen damage, we always contact our client and adjuster to receive further instruction as to what can be done. Items that are discolored, blistered or have signs of more extensive claim-related damage may require refinishing.

  • Clothing and Flatwork
  • If authorized, clothing and flatwork, such as sheets, towels, blankets, etc., will be wet- or dry-cleaned as necessary, and deodorized often using the ozone process.

  • Electronics
  • Electronics, such as televisions, receivers, and microwaves, will be hand cleaned with a degreaser and deodorized. In some situations, soot or other particulate matter may have entered the interior. Tampa Fire Restoration has special equipment that allows us to decontaminate the interior electronics. If authorized, we will send the item to the appropriate repair facility to perform a more in-depth systems check.

Once these contents are cleaned, and deodorized these items are stored safely until they can be returned to the home.

Tampa Fire Restoration specializes in structural cleaning following a fire.

The first step in cleaning a structure in a home is to remove the soot first before any cleaning.

  • Porous Hard Materials- Drywall, painted surfaces, plaster, exposed wood, and wallpaper. We always begin with a dry chemical sponge to remove the first layers of soot. Then we HEPA vacuum and damp wipe all surfaces.

  • Semi-Porous Materials- Sealed woods, countertops, appliances, vinyl wallpaper, and metals. We always use a sponge and detergent or special fire cleaning solution on these materials. Please note that any household metals must be protected by oil solution prior to any cleaning to prevent permanent damage from the acids in the soot.
